Use Mac? Get Love

This is plain awesome. If you are a Mac user and use showRSS, you'll probably love showRSSX. An awesome user made it (plus you can see the code in the repo).

Just download the DMG, drop it into your Applications folder and run it. Set it to download the torrent files to a folder, then set your favorite torrent client to watch that directory (Transmission and µTorrent are both good choices!).

There is also a pretty good explanation of how to use it. Here it is.

Healing the pain

For the last days, we ran into some serious problems on the server side. Things are now recovered, drop a comment, contact us or tweet us if you notice something broken (hope not, though!).

Technical version: Debian 4.0 setup was having some serious bottlenecks at network level. Being into a vz container, even having control over the host machine didn't help. We've moved to a vanilla CentOS setup and started using nginx, plus resolved some technical issues arising from the change. This should feel a lot faster and work as it should.

As usual, you can report anything through the comments or help with a donation.

Well, express update:

Clicking the shows' name, both in the homepage and in your list will take you to a page with a graph of the show subscribers, and the latest torrents available for the show
You can check latest added shows in the homepage
We've added a heavy caching layer, so you might see some delays on content appearing in the website (but you should just feel it faster, nothing else)
Yup, we had some issues with duplicated items, entire seasons suddenly appearing in feeds, but those issues should be fixed now (along with badly formatted feeds)
Torrent pushing (for Transmission users) and Twitter sharing (receiving latest aired episodes and publishing episodes marked as seen in the schedule) have been improved
Everything should feel faster right now!

And yup, the logo just got tuned. Stay tuned, too!

December update

There are intermittent issuse with torrent links. This is because zoink.it is having problems.
We are going to add magnet links in the mid-term, and will only concern the website (not for the RSS feed... yet!).
Duplicate items for Burn Notice and 30 Rock have been removed.

Concerning new features, there are also some things to say:

We now entirely rely on the TVrage API to generate the schedule, instead of parsing EPguides.
There is a checkbox near each episode name in the "Aired episodes" section of your schedule. That way, you can mark an episode as seen!
You can also link your Twitter account with showRSS (through the "settings" page), and a message will be posted to your account each time you mark an episode as seen.

And, also, in case anyone minds... Donations are open again (but there is no specific reason for that, we're okay!).

Look, there's a feature

You may have noticed the new "Schedule" menu option. Yes! You can now see when the next episode for your shows are airing. Some episodes may be missing, but hey, we do what we can.

Going 2.0

Yes. What you are seeing right now is showRSS 2.0... There is no difference at all with the older one, except for internals (and some little details, like the "enhanced feed" being the only one right now... not a big deal at all!).

Main change: subscribe many shows as you want. Hell yes. We just refactored the code, and had to push up the changes before applying patches to start importing the EZTV twitter timeline. Expect this last one to come in the next 24h (now code monkeys will sleep, and we'll see later). Technically speaking: we don't juse huge JOINs anymore, we switched to a subscribe-then-push (queing) scheme. And that means great things to come!

A foot note: this is early-pre-alpha, and things may explode at any moment... let us know if you run in any issues! (you probably will find ones). We didn't expect to push the code this night... but had to. Sorry for the inconvenients, the downtime and the delayed responses ;-).

EZTV has issues (again)

EZTV went down. We hope they will be back shortly, if not, we'll code a fix to get shows from their Twitter as soon as we can.

Sorry for the inconvenience! (And we are going to apply new changes to avoid those problems in a future. Sorry)

EDIT: we are going read-only for ~24h, so we can migrate the database and apply temporal fixes

Enhanced feed

A few days ago we released a new feature that you can adjust in your settings page. It's called "Enhanced feed". If you enable it, your "web feed" (what you see in the homepage and in "your shows" page) will be cleaned (leaving only the show name, the season, the episode number and the format). Links will also be colored depending if it's a 720p PROPER/REPACK, normal 720p or just standard-def torrent.

Welcome to showRSS 1.1!

Okay, not a big deal, but we made a lot of internal (and technical changes), not just changed the icons! The website was already fast, so you probably won't notice anything... but who knows :-)

We also made some changes in the "shows" webpage, changed some regular expressions to make them faster and better (now the show name highlighting should work fine for all shows) and added more AJAX functionalities to the "your shows" page (modify directly feed default settings from the same page without reloading). And moved things around (for example, grouped most detached pages under the help section).

On-the-fly page compression was also added. This may affect some torrent clients, so if you find any problem, tell us!. And, now, the sauce:

Fixing things

We just released a bugfix that should solve the issues of new shows not appearing in your feeds. Although released shows that never appeared in your feeds won't appear right now (you'll need to download them manually), future releases should appear with a very little delay (10min for the personal feed, 1-2 hours for the public feeds).

Delay issues

(Site coder here) I know about the issues. Please, post in the comments what shows are having issues (and what other shows are updating seamlessy) and I'll have a look as soon as I can. If you can, add the URL to the same show in EZTV and calculate the delay since the show appeared in EZTV, this will help us a lot.

I'm currently on holidays (enjoying the cold and green lands in Ireland) so don't expect any fix before Wednesday of the next week. And (as always), sorry for the incident (But we still have to see what's really going on!).

Anyway, feel free to post here any comments with information that may help, I'll be reading them (thank god there's EDGE coverage). And see you in a few days.

EZTV has recovered

Yep! EZTV has finally recovered. They are also bringing back their forum, and have released a tvRSS replacement, called ezRSS.

For everyone looking for a global feed, there's now one! (and directly powered by EZTV which is awesome). And if everyone was wondering, showRSS will continue working (of course!), providing custom feeds for your selected shows, and working on a better user experience (that is, new features, some improvements, and a better replacement for the forgotten FeedMyTorrents).

There's still a long way to go!
