New shows, and a future

Hello folks. Nothing really interesting around there, just the usual show addition, expired shows and some correction (badly linked shows which result in not-really-ended shows and wrong schedules/descriptions). As always, if you see anything, report.

We have added a bunch of shows since the last update, usually the ones requested through Twitter and email. Keep requesting!

And concerning the important part: future! Magnets are the future. H264 is, too. First off: it's not our choice, and it goes well up the ladder. We're really sorry for the ones still using their DVD from 2004 that was good because it supported XviD, but nowadays media devices do not support it (but do support H264 as its supported by embedded hardware). It's also been the choice for HTML5 videos, online streaming and has proven to provide very good quality in less size. Sadly, every evolution takes its toll… Sorry for everyone. Still, not our choice… But hopefully will compensate with good things.

The next thing on the list are magnets. In fact, it's been a request always put on hold. Not every client plays nice with them (for the moment, the best is Transmission, as we can push magnets to it without problems) but for setups where a torrent file is downloaded and then loaded into a client, that approach does not work.

That's why I'm writing right now. We need to collect information on what client you're using, how it behaves with torrents and how you think it would fit the best into it. We have to figure out how uTorrent and current setups would behave with RSS feeds and magnets, and with magnets alone, as well as related software. And we need your help!

Agreed. Sure, I could tell you that I'm using rTorrent (which I am), but surely you don't want to count the responses in the comments? Set up a proper poll and we'll answer it for you.

And while I'm speaking I would like to say that I'm grateful for the mighty fine service you're providing!

Thanks.

@Lardboy & others: the first step are comments. There are just so many approaches out there that we can't make a list. It would be way more helpful having users talk about their setup, clients and magnet support in them. We've got to find a way to put everything together…

I'm using BitComet and it usually plays nice with magnets, but we use other software using magnets on the intranet. Now that confuses my apps hehe, but thats not your problem. Luckily the web interface of BitComet allows you to add a magnet by pasting the link... Maybe such an API exist for the more open source clients?

I have uTorrent 3.1.2 32-bit (on a x64 machine). I've never had any problems with magnet links (it's just like a torrent link except that the metadata appears empty but gets uploaded a few seconds after). I don't know about an RSS magnet feed, I've never used one.

I'm not ashamed to say I'm one of those with a 2004 DVD player that plays XviD. This is the reason I started using this site in the first place. I have ShowRSS plus 25 different RSS feeds for HD shows. If you're not gonna offer xvid anymore, could you at least work on making the HD option work the way it should? I never get HD shows from ShowRSS. And I don't want to end up with 50 separate RSS feeds for xvid and HD for each of my shows instead of just ShowRSS.

@Cesar don't be ashamed, there's no reason to.
I myself still have one of those, but in my living room, I salvaged a old pentium and installed linux and Ktorrent. It's connected to my lan, and my LCD TV. Since then I just have to turn on the machine and it's all automated... no more burning DVDR after file download! It's much more convenient and faster!

i use flexget + deluge on a ubuntu server box. i'm not sure about deluge's support for magnets. i can see that they are working on it, but when i once tried to manually load a magnet url through the web interface it didn't work. i could switch to transmission, but there are a lot of nice extra flexget features that i am taking advantage of in the flexget deluge plugin that i think are not available in its transmission support.

I use transmission-daemon (2.5) running on a Dlink NAS. I usually download the torrent file from the RSS feed and place them into a watch directory.

I haven't yet looked into sending the RSS feed directly into Transmission, as I link to control exactly what is downloaded.

Hi, I'm using uTorrent on Windows.

About the H264 (.mp4), why don't you keep that optional, like the HD option? If we could choose the "quality" per show (.avi as usual, HD and the new .mp4)you still would be evoluting, and we the old ones would still being able to download the xvid shows. Please think about it.

Magnet or not to Magnet
23/03/2012
I have recently dropped uTorrent as I had all kinds of problems, especially with streaming after downloads to Xbox from Mezzmo. Now only use Miro 4.06 and have had zero problems with Magnet torrents. After downloading I do transfer still to Mezzmo and stream to Xbox (hard wired into router) and even mkv files play great (used to have problems).

Few comments.
1.
When going to a 3rd party site to download a magnetic torrent I have to right click and use "Download from URL" on menu in Miro. Its already inside the box and I simply click on "ok". But I can't just go to the Torrent site and click "Get this torrent" and have Miro open and start downloading as it did with MP4 or avi etc.
2. For whatever reason ASAP torents even with MP4 written at end do not work. Either they need to be converted by Miro to MP4 or you can avoid them and use another MP4 torrent to download (magnetic or not). This may be a problem particular to using the xbox, in terms of the ASAP problem.
3. I've never had any problem playing any torrent downloaded from showRSS which is by double clicking on my show list, when it pops up. If none of these have been magnetic, then it may be that I will need to right click to "get link address" and do the Url thing with Miro. Right now Miro instantly starts downloading any showRSS downloading torrent immeidiately.

I thnk Miro is light years better than utorrent and even the easy converting is a plus not to mention all the Utorrent settings to play with. On Miro, I have not changed one setting and downloading is much faster (I have very high speed internet).

Thanks

I'm using utorrent 3.? running as a service on WHS. It USED to be easy to just save a torrent file in a watch directory - even taught the whole family how to do it. I don't have a great solution for magnets yet. I can paste them into the utorrent remote bar, but that isn't as easy. No idea if magnet links can be grabbed through rss feeds.

BTW, automatic pushes to transmission haven't been working the past few days - probably related to the server move, but I thought I'd mention it in case.

uTorrent (latest?) on WHS.

I used to use my xbox for watching but most of the time h264 breaks it so I bought a WDTV streamer and that works great AND has Netflix support w/o the xbox charge on top (though the xbox was a nice UI while it lasted)

For anyone commenting here who's been downloading their torrents and saving them to a watch-directory, if you use Firefox to browse and your bittorrent client is one of {Azureus/Vuze,Transmission,uTorrent,Deluge}, then you can install Firefox extension "BitTorrent WebUI+" as a magnet-link handler. It'll process clicks on magnet links (and torrent files), and hand them off to the remote-management UI of your torrent client (which does have to be enabled & configured).

I use it to hand off torrent/magnet links to Azureus running on my headless Linux server. (@ShowRSS, for the purposes of this informal poll, that's my setup — but for the ShowRSS feed, that's handled directly within Azureus by its RSSFeed Scanner plugin. That's kind of long in the tooth and its help makes no mention of magnet, so I'm a bit pessimistic about things working for me as-is after the feed starts carrying magnet links.)

Transmission, served by gPodder on Linux. I don't think gPodder does magnet links so I'd have to change something up.

I'm also looking at building a NAS and I see a few mentions that the embedded OS others use doesn't handle magnets. I hope I can overcome that.

Show additions should get a "New Shows" feed for themselves. This feed would download a url file for each new show that would direct you to the page on showRSS for that new show. You could then just add "New Shows" just like you would add any other show to your personal feed. This would be the easiest way to keep up to date on newly added shows.
BigRedBrent
26/09/2012
If magnet links are used then a link could be added to the as parameter pointing to the small url file so that no torrent server is needed.
BigRedBrent
26/09/2012
I guess the ws flag is needed for utorrent. And I guess even with magnet links a torrent server would still be needed, because the client will not start downloading even from a defined web source until it has retrieved the torrent file from someone first.
